DJ or band – this is a dilemma faced by many couples when planning a wedding. As many couples, as many opinions. Both options have undeniable advantages and some limitations. Which is better? It is definitely an individual matter. Each of us has different priorities, dreams and budgets. So it is good to analyse both options and make the right decision for yourselves.
Live music
A band at a wedding lets us party to music played live, here and now. Many people choose a band mainly for this reason. In addition, musicians usually arrange songs so that they are always good for dancing. One of the performers often plays a double role: they can be a singer or instrumentalist and at the same time make toasts, encourage guests to have fun and lead the part of the wedding with, for example, the traditional games or thanks to the parents – in a word, they act as the MC.
Live music does have certain limitations, though. Firstly: the style typical of a given band may not always be to our taste, so finding a proven band may take a little more time. Secondly: a band's repertoire will be much more limited than a DJ's. Musicians will not attempt songs they do not know or have never rehearsed together. Instead, their list of hits will include classics that are quite typical of wedding parties.
A wedding with a DJ console
Choosing a wedding DJ seems a little easier. The songs we hear during the party will sound like the originals or very close to them. This is important if we want to dance to our favourite music. What else is worth considering when choosing a wedding DJ, and how do you choose the best one? We certainly look at their portfolio. We usually have the opportunity to ask for samples of performances and previous events, so we can immediately feel the atmosphere of the parties run by that person.
The second important issue is communication. Does the DJ reply to messages, call back, how easy is it to talk to them, do we understand each other? This matters with a view to longer cooperation and several conversations in which we will agree on the key musical elements of the wedding party. A good wedding DJ is one we can easily connect with and discuss the most important details with – details they will remember.
Once we have decided on a particular wedding DJ, it is worth knowing what we want to ask them and agree on. We once wrote about the most important questions to ask a DJ in a separate article. It may seem that by choosing a DJ we rule out live music at the wedding. Not necessarily. We can choose a performance by an instrumentalist who works with the DJ, which lets us enjoy music played live! This is exactly the kind of offer Matt Remay Group has for you! Choose from violin for your wedding, saxophone and even drums!
Costs – the key difference
When asking yourself what will be better for a wedding – a DJ or a band – it is worth checking how much it costs to hire a band and how much a DJ costs. Working with a DJ will usually be the cheaper option. A wedding band is several people, while a DJ usually works alone, so the price difference can be as much as threefold.
Remember that…
Both a band and a DJ at a wedding have their pros and cons. If you have decided to work with a proven DJ who will provide unforgettable music at your wedding in Kraków or elsewhere in Lesser Poland, contact Matt Remay Group.
