Thanking the parents is one of the most important and moving moments for the couple during the wedding. Traditionally, the newlyweds give their parents a gift and then dance together. But does it have to look the same at every celebration?
What song to dedicate to your parents at the wedding?
Following the traditional pattern of thanking the parents, couples often chose Urszula Sipińska's song “Cudownych rodziców mam” (I have wonderful parents). But it is not the only option. So what song should you choose to thank your parents at the wedding?
Among Polish recordings you can choose songs from the 70s or 80s, or go for contemporary arrangements. Examples from this repertoire include:
- Anna Jantar – “Radość najpiękniejszych lat”;
- Maciej Dziemiańczuk – “Za każdy dzień”;
- Zbigniew Wodecki – “Lubię wracać tam, gdzie byłem już”;
- Kortez “Dla mamy”,
- VanHoltz “Rodzicom”.
If Polish music does not suit your taste, it is worth looking at international repertoire. Here you have a very wide choice.
Remember that the song you choose does not have to fit the occasion perfectly in its lyrics. A good idea is a song that means something to you and your parents and brings back fond memories or associations.
Ideas for thanking your parents
The music to thank your parents has been chosen. So it is time to think about how this moment of your wedding will look: will you give a short speech, ask the DJ to announce it and thank your parents individually in a more intimate setting, or perhaps do this part of the wedding programme in a completely different way? Among the ideas for thanking your parents on your wedding day, there are several interesting options.
- Flowers – an idea that has worked for years. Nowadays, however, you can choose something longer-lasting than a basket of flowers, such as potted plants or a box of preserved roses.
- Unusual gift – you can also choose an unusual gift for your parents: a spa stay, a trip, an extreme experience (a balloon flight, skydiving, etc.) – it all depends on your loved ones' preferences.
- Personalized gift – or maybe your parents like jigsaw puzzles and you give them a puzzle made from a joint photo? Or accessories with special wishes for them: hand-embroidered pillows or bed linen. You can also personalise jewellery, a photo album or a photo book.
- Video – in the age of new technologies, a video prepared especially for your parents can be very moving: moments from your childhood combined with interesting shared memories are sure to touch everyone's heart.
- Your own performance – couples with a talent for singing can perform a gift song for their parents themselves.
And what if the parents are not there?
Who you want to thank on your wedding day, and how, is up to you. For various reasons, the couple's parents may not be at the wedding. If there are other special people among you whom you want to honour during the wedding, there is nothing to stop you, even if they are not your parents.
There are many ideas for thanking your parents at the wedding, as well as songs that can be used at such a moment. It all depends on your creativity, matching the gift to mum and dad's tastes, and the character of the celebration. If you are unsure about the choice of music, you can ask for advice from a wedding DJ. Their experience will certainly dispel any doubts and help you choose the perfect music for such a moment.
