Wedding violin – how to choose the repertoire?

Music is a very important element that completes a wedding ceremony and gives it a unique atmosphere. On this day, many couples choose their own musical setting. Among the popular choices are violinists.

Couples usually imagine a violin playing the iconic Ave Maria by F. Schubert in church. What other violin pieces can you consider when planning your wedding?

A classic of the genre

Staying within more classical pieces, you can choose a version of Ave Maria less popular than Schubert's. Here you can choose from:

  • Bach's Ave Maria,
  • Caccini's Ave Maria,
  • Lorenz's Ave Maria.

Many will appreciate the unusual character of pieces such as Mozart's „Ave Verum” or Franck's „Panis Angelicus”. In the original, each of these pieces has a vocal line, usually sung in a foreign language, so performing them on violin is certainly an interesting choice, allowing listeners to fully focus on the musical layer.

Classic, though not religious

Among violin pieces that work wonderfully at a wedding without a typically religious character, a few titles stand out. In this group it's worth mentioning Pachelbel's „Canon in D”, „Gabriel's Oboe” from The Mission, or Bach's „Air on the G String”.

Requested hits

When choosing the repertoire for your wedding's musical setting, you need to take certain limitations into account. If the ceremony is held in a church, not every piece the couple comes up with can be played during the mass. This applies to pop songs, but also, not always, to religious folk songs. It can vary by parish, so just to be safe, it's worth agreeing on the chosen repertoire with the local priest or organist.

Couples having a civil wedding have much greater, almost unlimited, freedom. In that case, a musician can agree to perform practically any piece. However, not every song will sound perfect in a violin version. It's worth choosing songs with a clear melodic line. Examples include: „Stand by Me” by Ben E. King, „Perfect” by Ed Sheeran, „You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban, „What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong, „Can't Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley, or even favorite songs from Disney movies.

Solo, or maybe as a duet?

When looking for ideas for your wedding's musical setting, you can choose a solo violin, accompanied by organ, but couples also often choose a violin + vocal duet. This combination gives a wide range of repertoire choices, and the violin can also venture into improvisation, giving the pieces an original sound.
