A white dress, a veil, carrying the bride over the threshold, breaking glasses for good luck, the first dance, and guests loudly shouting “gorzko!” (kiss!) – these are just some of the traditions present at modern weddings. As with all traditional customs, some are modified and modernized, while others are abandoned altogether. So what about oczepiny?
When organizing the celebration, you need to be prepared that, for instance, during discussions with your wedding DJ you'll need to decide whether, and to what extent, various games should take place at your party, including of course the famous oczepiny. There are couples who rule out this kind of attraction right away because they have bad associations with it. There are also those who hesitate on the subject, because there are always two sides to every coin. So what are the pros and cons of a wedding without oczepiny?
What is oczepiny?
This custom comes from Slavic culture and symbolizes a newlywed woman's transition from single to married status. In the past, the bride's maiden wreath was removed and replaced with a cap intended for married women. In more contemporary wedding traditions, it has become customary to organize various games around midnight involving the newlyweds, including the famous veil toss. Unfortunately, many of these games still teeter on the edge of good taste, which is why not everyone decides to include them in their wedding plan.
The good side of the force
Undoubtedly good news for people who love to dance is that without oczepiny you have more time for dancing. However, there may also be those who want to replace the midnight games with other attractions. Skipping oczepiny opens up space for a special fireworks display, releasing sky lanterns, or a performance by an illusionist, a dance group or a flair bartender. There can be many ideas, and everyone will find something for themselves here. One thing is certain: when there are no embarrassing games, no one has to escape the room at midnight, and there's no awkward pulling onto the dance floor of people who don't care for this still-popular custom. Importantly, if there are too few single guests in the room, the original oczepiny format doesn't really make sense, so it's worth reviewing your guest list when considering whether to include this part of the tradition at your reception.
Downsides of a wedding without oczepiny
Oczepiny is one of the elements that makes a wedding party stand out. A downside of dropping the midnight games entirely can be blurring that distinction, taking away a certain uniqueness from the wedding and making it feel like just another dance party. The absence of oczepiny games also means fewer opportunities for wedding guests to bond. Musical chairs, dancing in a silly costume, skill contests – they can not only provide entertainment but also bring together people who may be complete strangers to each other at the start of the reception.
Couples who decide to have a wedding without oczepiny should be aware that among their guests there may be enthusiasts for whom tradition is paramount, and skipping the midnight veil toss may cause considerable disappointment.
Modern oczepiny, or an alternative
Skipping oczepiny doesn't have to mean the wedding will have no games or attractions at all. You can choose a form of entertainment that stays tasteful, so no one feels put off by games that can sometimes become an embarrassing spectacle for their participants. A good host/MC will organize this part of the reception so that both the couple and their guests are happy. You just need to talk to them about your expectations early enough.
It's worth remembering that what becomes a mandatory element at any given wedding depends entirely on the stars of the evening – the couple and their own individual vision.
