A wedding without disco polo – can it work?

We have chosen the venue, the invitations and our dream outfits. One of the important arrangements still ahead is a talk with the DJwe have invited to work with us. At this meeting we will decide what the music at our wedding should be like. What should we choose if, for nothing in the world, we want to hear the sounds of the very popular disco polo on that day? Does a party without this kind of music even make sense?

Two sides of the coin

Disco polo – a genre born in the 1980s – is a phenomenon of the Polish music scene. On the one hand, it is inseparably associated with wedding feasting, and many people cannot imagine a dance party without catchy disco songs. On the other hand, when you ask someone whether they listen to this kind of music, the answer is often no, although somehow the lyrics “just stuck” on their own. There are also those who get goosebumps at the first notes of disco polo hits. The choice of wedding music is up to the couple, and it is good to agree everything with the DJ so that the main characters of the day feel at ease.

What instead?

So what options do we have if we do not want to watch our guests singing the chorus of “Jesteś szalona” together at our party? Disco polo is characterised by an even rhythm beaten out by drums and a simple melody usually played on keyboards. A contrast could be the idea of using songs with violin or saxophone in the background at the wedding. The atmospheric sounds of these noble instruments are sure to catch the guests' attention and keep the party dancing.

It is good to remember that weddings bring together different age groups with different musical preferences. A professional DJ will prepare a list of various songs that will satisfy the musical needs of all guests. Songs worth considering when creating a wedding playlist may include:

  • classics of the 70s and 80s – Skaldowie, Czerwone Gitary, Irena Jarocka, Breakout, Abba, Modern Talking – music that will certainly appeal to the older generation;
  • hits combining folk with rock – songs by Brathanki or Golec uOrkiestra work well here;
  • contemporary radio classics – a nod to current trends that are great for dancing.

Disco polo, jazz style

If your guests demand popular disco polo tracks, you can try their jazz covers. Remember Cezik's famous jazz arrangement of the disco polo hit “Ona tańczy dla mnie”. Such an alternative can also be a hit. Guests will hear a familiar melody, and the couple will be happy with the sound of double bass or saxophone at their wedding.

A wedding – for the couple or for the guests?

When planning the music, you need to take into account that there may always be people unhappy with your choice. That is why the couple's opinion should be key – it is their celebration, after all! A conversation with the DJ will clarify how to put together the playlist for your reception. If there are special requests, e.g. “we want violin at our wedding”, they will certainly be taken into account – so that the music suits your individual character and needs as closely as possible.
